Archangel Gabriel appears to The Virgin Mary and with great joy announces the good news of the coming birth of Jesus Christ. (Luke1:26-38) Gabriel with his hand outstretched gazes upon the Theotokos who is not frightened by the angel, but surprised. The simplicity of this icon creates the emphasis on the two dominant themes of this great event: announcement and acceptance. From Luke1:28, Gabriel says, “Rejoice, O highly favored daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.” In Luke 1:38, Theotokos responds, “I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.” The ray of light depicts the action of the Trinity through the action of The Holy Spirit. God, The Father, sends The Holy Spirit to the Theotokos, The Virgin conceives through The Holy Spirit and the Son becomes flesh in the womb of The Virgin.
